Structure and evolution of a Messinian mixed carbonate-siliciclastic platform: the role of evaporites (Sorbas Basin, South-east Spain).

2010

36 pages; International audience; The Sorbas Member is a late Messinian complex sedimentary systemthat formed immediately following deposition of the Messinian evaporites in the Sorbas Basin (South-east Spain). This work describes the sequence architecture and facies organization of a continuous kilometre long, alluvial fan to open platform transect near the village of Cariatiz in the north-east of the basin. The postevaporitic Cariatiz platform was a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system composed of four intermediate-frequency, fifth-order depositional sequences (Depositional Sequences 1 to 4) arranged in an overall prograding trend. The intense fracturing and brecciation of these deposits …

Discovery of an Autunian macroflora and lithostratigraphic re-investigation on the western border of the Lodève Permian basin (Mont Sénégra, Hérault,…

2013

11 pages; International audience; Re-investigation of the western edge of the Lodève basin allows reassignment of one sandstone-conglomerate formation previously identified as "terminal Stephanian" to Early Autunian. The existence of two unconformable (Stephanian and Autunian) megasequences, separated by a sedimentary gap, which had been rejected, is thus re-affirmed. The authors also found, less than 20 m above the basal Autunian conglomerate, a macroflora with taxa characteristic of the famous Tuilières flora from a site, located in the eastern part of the basin near Lodève, in the Grey Autunian group. This confirms that the new Mont Sénégra fossiliferous beds belong to the Lower Autunian…

The formation of alluvial fans and young floodplain deposits in the Lieser catchment, Eifel Mountains, western German Uplands: A study of soil erosio…

2011

This study deals with the exploration and spatiotemporal quantification of the young Holocene, nearly skeleton-free floodplain sediments of the Lieser River, a tributary of the Mosel River in the Eifel Mts. The deposits are primarily a consequence of anthropogenic-triggered soil erosion in the catchment. To observe the phenomenon of corresponding soil erosion on multiple levels two small alluvial fans of tributary catchments were investigated. For comparison, one location in the neighboring Salm valley was described. The results were compared with those of other streams. With extensive fieldwork more than 100 drillings and pits were made at 12 locations. For dating the sediments OSL dating…

Using post-flood surveys and geomorphologic mapping to evaluate hydrological and hydraulic models: The flash flood of the Girona River (Spain) in 2007

2016

This paper analyzes the Girona River (Spain) flash flood, occurred on the 12th of October 2007, combining hydrological and hydraulic modeling with geomorphologic mapping and post-flood survey information. This research aims to reproduce the flood event in order to understand and decipher the flood processes and dynamics on a system of prograding alluvial fans. The hydrological model TETIS was used to characterize the shape and dimension of the October 2007 Girona River hydrograph. Subsequently, the flood event was reproduced using the free surface flow module of the model RiverFlow2D. The combination of hydrological and hydraulic models was evaluated using post-flood surveys defining maximu…

Late Pleistocene and Holocene landscape history of the central Palatinate forest (Pfälzerwald, south-western Germany)

2010

Abstract Field studies on the Late Pleistocene and Holocene landscape history were conducted in the central Palatinate Forest ( Pfalzerwald , Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) near the village of Johanniskreuz. The structure and composition of periglacial cover beds, the young floodplain sediments of the Aschbach, Schwarzbach und Moosalbe valleys, and the sediment structure in some dry valleys, of alluvial fans and slope colluvia, were studied. The sandy cover beds are less than 10% aeolian, and in all cases only the main and basal layer are present, with no evidence of the intermediate layer. In general, the cover beds resemble those of other parts of the Central German Uplands ( Mittelgebirg…

Eolian and fluvial sedimentation in the southwestern Sinai Mountains, Egypt: a record of flash floods during the late Pleistocene

2012

Wadis emerging from the southwestern Sinai Mountains (Egypt) westwards to the Gulf of Suez are filled by >40 m thick late Pleistocene sediments, which have been subsequently incised to bedrock after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Sedimentation and erosion resulted from changes in the basin's hydrological conditions caused by climate variations. Sediment characteristics indicate distinct processes ranging from high to low energy flow regimes. Airborne material is important as a sediment source. The fills are associated with alluvial fans at wadi mouths at the mountain fronts. Each alluvial fan is associated and physically correlated with the respective sediment fill in its contributi…

The MIS 5 palaeoenvironmental record in the SE Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula (Río Antas, Almería, Spain)

2015

Landwards of a MIS5 bar, a borehole core (SRA) was analyzed to establish the relationship between the lagoonal record and the raised beach deposits in the surroundings of the Antas river mouth and to reconstruct the Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental evolution 5 of the southern Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. 63 samples were recovered for amino acid racemization datin…

A complex thrust sequence in western Himalaya: the active Medlicott Wadia Thrust.

2017

15 pages; International audience; The recent activity of the Medlicott-Wadia Thrust (MWT) is investigated by geomorphic and tectonic studies in the Riasi zone, south of the Pir Panjal range (India, Jammu-Kasmir state of western Himalaya). In the Riasi area, the MWT forms a splay of five faults that dip northward. The recent activity of the splay is quantified using a set of deformed Quaternary alluvial units. The central branch of the thrust splay moved Precambrian limestones above Quaternary sediments and is sealed by 36 ± 3 ka (youngest OSL age) deposits. The other branches offset the top of a 15 ± 1 ka (youngest OSL age) alluvial fan by 180 to 120 m; the two southernmost branches form 17…

Late Quaternary slip rates for the southern Elsinore fault in the Coyote Mountains, southern California from analysis of alluvial fan landforms and c…

2019

Abstract Offset alluvial fans along the Elsinore fault in the south-central Coyote Mountains were studied to resolve an average late Quaternary slip rate for this major western strand of the San Andreas fault system in southern California. Alluvial fans and their offsets were mapped using high-resolution DEMs combined with field observations of fan-surface morphology and the character of the soils developed in each fan remnant. Clast assemblage data was used to determine the source of each alluvial fan upstream of the fault, and U-series dating of pedogenic carbonate was used to estimate minimum ages of the alluvial fan surfaces. Forty U-Th dates on pedogenic carbonate confirm the utility o…

Stratigraphy of the Neoproterozoic Damara Sequence in northwest Namibia: Slope to basin sub-marine mass-transport deposits and olistolith fields

2016

Abstract The Neoproterozoic Damara Sequence (>1000 m thick) is composed of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks that crop out in the Damara Belt, Namibia. In Damaraland (including the Vrede, Bethanis, Austerlitz and Toekoms farms), these rocks were deformed and metamorphosed under greenschist facies (biotite zone) conditions during the Damara Orogeny. The stratigraphy and paleoenvironments of the Damara Sequence rocks are debated by the scientific community. We use field data, including detailed 1:25,000 geological mapping, elaboration of stratigraphic profiles and observation of preserved primary structures, textures and composition, to identify lithofacies and lithofacies associations, and t…
